Indonesia becomes a full member of BRICS

On 6 January 2025 the Government of Brazil, which holds the BRICS chairmanship in 2025, announced that Indonesia had become a full member of the group. Indonesia's candidacy was approved by the leaders back in August 2023, but Jakarta asked to postpone the formal step until after the presidential election and the inauguration of the new government in October 2024.

Indonesia is the world's fourth most populous country, the largest economy of South-East Asia and the first ASEAN member to join BRICS. The country had taken part in the Kazan summit as a partner and, with its accession, left the partner list. The number of full members thus rose to ten, with Saudi Arabia's status remaining undetermined.

Bahasa Indonesia has been one of the languages of this website since its launch. Indonesia's accession opens to the Alliance a network of over 4,000 universities and one of the richest intangible heritages of the Asia-Pacific region.
