BRICS culture ministers meet in St. Petersburg for the first time in the enlarged format

On 14 September 2024 the ninth meeting of the BRICS Ministers of Culture took place at the Russian Ethnographic Museum in St. Petersburg, within the 10th St. Petersburg International United Cultures Forum. For the first time the meeting was held in the enlarged format: alongside Brazil, India, China and South Africa it brought together delegations from Egypt, Iran, the UAE and Ethiopia. The meeting was chaired by the Minister of Culture of Russia.

The ministers signed a Declaration setting out joint priorities for the coming years. Russia proposed two new BRICS platforms — an Alliance of Folk Dance Culture and an Association of Film Schools with an annual student film festival and a joint summer school — and invited the member countries to join the Eurasian Academy of Cinematic Arts and its Open Eurasian Film Award. The ministers welcomed the revival of the BRICS Culture Festival and noted the success of the 8th BRICS Film Festival held in April 2024.

The meeting was held in the city where the Council of the Alliance has its seat. The Alliance supports the course towards institutional cultural cooperation — associations of schools, festivals and academies — as the form in which the heritage of the BRICS countries can be preserved and passed on.
