The 17th BRICS summit was held in Rio de Janeiro on 6–7 July 2025 under the theme «Strengthening Global South Cooperation for a More Inclusive and Sustainable Governance». It was the first summit attended by Indonesia as a full member and by the partner countries — Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda, Uzbekistan and Vietnam. The UN Secretary-General addressed the leaders.
The Rio de Janeiro Declaration reaffirms the three pillars of BRICS cooperation — political and security, economic and financial, and cultural and people-to-people — and calls for reform of the United Nations, the IMF and the World Bank. Alongside the declaration the leaders adopted a separate Statement on the Global Governance of Artificial Intelligence and a Framework Declaration on Climate Finance, endorsed the Tropical Forest Forever Facility ahead of COP 30 in Belém, and launched the BRICS Partnership for the Elimination of Socially Determined Diseases.
The AI statement is the first document at the level of BRICS leaders to set out common principles for the development and use of artificial intelligence, including in research and education. It continues the line taken by the education ministers a month earlier and provides a framework for the Alliance's own work on ethical standards in science and teaching.
